Kids and Journal Writing

My son was behind in reading and writing since he was in the first grade, his teacher suggested he keep a diary or journal of sorts. When we started he would write down his thoughts or stories and I'd look at them and correct them. I found that by correcting them, it wasn't fun any longer. So he and I decided that he could write down anything he wanted in that journal. It could be what happened during his day whether it was great or awful and he could write an entire page. This was his thing. He could look back and see how he was improving as time went on.

He's now going into fourth grade and the journal has helped both reading and writing. We even keep it up during the summer months. It's a year around project to help him, especially in the summer because he doesn't have school. So this is a little extra thing to do in the summer to keep him reading and writing.
