Teaching Kids About Currency

I have traveled abroad quite extensively. One night at home some years ago, I was dumping change from my pocket, and some of the bills fell out too. My 4 year old daughter thought that these bills were all called “dollars”. In that instance I realized I had a wonderful opportunity to teach her about currency (and Cultures) from around the world.

We made up a plan to find each of the countries I had visited on the globe and I talked about about the culture and currency in that country and gave her some money from that country to keep. It was a wonderful way to begin teaching her about the world beyond the United States.

In later years, she used some of the money during her geography classes to explain the differences in culture and currencies. She also learned how to convert money from one country into the different currencies of another country.
