Raising Children While Working From Home

Here are some tips for parents raising children while working from home.
One of the most important things to do is to make sure that you have an appropriate work space so whenever you go there, you have the mindset that you are going to be working. It helps your kids to know that too. When they see you in that space, they know that is a time when you are not to be disturbed.

If you're working on computers, make sure that you have the appropriate electrical outlets in that space. I needed a space that was separate from my kids. I needed to be able to close the door and let them know that mom was working, and they either needed to be with the babysitter, or when they were older, they needed to be on their own and should not disturb me unless it was an emergency. That way this rule was respected by all of us.

I also found it important to have really good self-discipline when working from home. It is very tempting if you hear your kids fighting in the next room to drop everything you're doing and go take care of things. But it is actually very good for the children to learn to work things out for themselves.

To make things really work for me, I needed to realize that my work time was valuable and it took a little while to get used to that idea. When I realized that I really loved what I was doing, I honored my work time.

Working from home gave me an opportunity to be actively involved in my children's lives, while still actively involved in the work world.
