The Family "Been There" Map

This is a map that you purchase at any store, the larger the better. It's a world map that you hang somewhere that your kids will see it everyday. Every time you go on a trip, let the kids put a star over the place that you visited, whether it's a new state in the U.S. or a whether it is a new country, and when their friends come over your children can show off all the places that they have visited. It's a great conversation piece for the kids and adults.
One of the academic skills that this shores up is the geography skill. I think giving kids mapping skills translates into so many great skills later in life, because not only are they learning where they've been or maybe where they want to go, but they get a visual idea of their relation to the rest of the world, which can be a pretty big place when you're awfully little. But if they look at it in the context of a map and all the stars that depict where they've been and where they're going, that gives them a little better perspective that maybe the world is not quite as big as they once thought it was, so it's great for geography skills.

I think you can start this with your kids as early at age 3 or 4. It is so fun for them to put the star on the places they have visited.
