Parenting Priorities

Parenting Priorities

We have a pretty unusual situation. I have quadruplets, 3 1/2 year old girls, and then I have a baby boy who is 20 months old. So right off the bat it is not typical these days for a mom to have 5 children when she's 30 years old.

One of our children has been going through a lot of medical issues. She had a liver transplant at 9 months old. She was ill for a long time before and after the transplant and I spent 13 months in a hospital with her, most of that in the ICU.
That perspective has changed my life incredibly. I have learned a lot about priorities. Money doesn't mean anything when you're sitting next to your child wondering if she is going to live for the next moment or not. Your job, whether your house is clean, whether your kids clothes are clean, none of that matters when you're sitting next to your seriously sick child.

This experience has taught me what's important is family; my daughters, my son, my husband, my extended family. Those are the things that really matter. My new perspective is "I don't sweat the small stuff". When I get too stressed out, I call one of my friends who has triplets too. I try to find someone who can help me express myself.

Sometimes I tell my husband "I have to go. I'm going to Starbucks to read my magazine for 30 minutes and then I'll be back. You have the bridge". When I come home I'm refreshed and I'm a happy mommy again!
