Kids Dictating Stories

Kids Dictating Stories
Children should be encouraged at a very early age to tell you stories, and of course little children make-up things as they have such great imaginations. At some point you might say to them that maybe you could write their stories down and make a real book about it.
The important thing is that they don't just listen to your stories, but they tell you their own. The idea is to really get kids involved in thinking and explaining in the actual "story-telling" to parents. This helps a child put things in perspective in their own life.

We want to move children into the "literary club" so we have them writing books now, just like the books they read, except they wrote them. It's very powerful because it makes them authors and then they can read because they wrote it and they can illustrate these stories. This will help the child develop an independent writing life where they're writing their own stories.

Computers make this process easier for older children, but when they're very young, the parents should write the stories their children are dictating with papers and crayons. Make it fun and educational at the same time!
