Newborns And Dolls

Newborns And Dolls

When my second child was born, I ran into a little problem with my first-born. I had read several articles to help us get my daughter ready for the new baby, but since she was only 2 years old at the time, it wasn't easy for her to understand what was happening.

The real problems developed when the day-to-day activities had settled and she wanted to hold the baby, feed the baby, change the diaper, etc. I tried to let her help but she would get frustrated and the baby would get fussy and I felt like I was always telling my oldest to step back and basically get away so I could work with the baby.

When I told my mother this, she suggested that I get my daughter a doll that looked like a newborn baby. Then when I did something with the baby, she could do the same thing with her doll, like feeding the baby or changing her clothes.

She is not as frustrated and she is getting better at holding the "real" baby because of her practice with the doll. My mother said she knew it would work because that is exactly what she had done with me when my sister was born. I realize it is a good tradition to keep going!
