Writing Activity for Slumber/Birthday Party

It is good to get your own children writing, but it's even better if you can get their friends writing also because then it becomes a cool group-friendly thing to do. You tell them there is going to be a little contest and you cut up little pieces of paper and depending on the ages (if under 12) have them write something really simple.

Give everybody 6 or 7 pieces of paper and have them write a color on every piece, or the name of an animal on every piece. Then put everybody's slips of paper in a box and mix them all up and then have everybody pull out the same amount that they put in. Put them in groups of 3, give them paper and pen, and tell them to start a story and the first sentence needs to have at least three of the words that they picked out of the box. In each sentence after that, use at least one more word. Let them write for about three minutes, and then tell them to pass their story to the left.

The idea is to let everyone in every group write on every story and all the things that they're writing have to do with the words that they pulled out of the box. This makes it easy and silly and they have lots of fun doing this. If they're older than 8 or 9, have them write a lyric from a song.

After they're finished, you tell them that each group needs to pick out the best story. Then they vote for the group story they liked the best and that group wins a little prize. I find that my really good writers are the ones who have fun with their writing.
