Activity "Time-Outs" For Kids

Activity "Time-Outs" For Kids

I found that regular time-out was not working with my oldest daughter, so I came up with the idea of "activity" time-outs.

It started last summer with a "pool time-out" when my oldest daughter was really misbehaving and had already been in time-out and was getting to the point where I was going to have to say that we couldn't go to the pool anymore. My father, who was visiting at the time, said that wouldn't be fair to the younger two children, so the pool time-out was born.

I made her get out of the pool and sit with me for 5 minutes while the other children stayed in the pool and played. We talked about what behavior she did that caused the time-out and it really focused on the behavior and also denied her what she really wanted to do: swim.

This really has made an impact on her and I have only had to use it about 3-4 times. Now, I give her the warning and say "you're about to get one" and she'll straighten right up.

My kids really dislike getting an "activity" time-out.
