Bedtime Songs

Bedtime Songs

I developed this routine when I was a teenager:

My mom was returning to school and I was taking care of my younger brother. She really loved babies, but she couldn’t stand to put them down for bedtime because they cried at times. So, I developed a series of songs to sing at bedtime.

I started with a happy one and then sang slower songs until I was eventually just humming. My brother would go to sleep easily. So I carried this same routine over to when my children were young, starting out with happy songs that are upbeat but gradually getting slower and slower with the songs until you are humming the last song over and over.

I believe that it’s the sequence that makes the difference, not the actual songs. The same pattern over and over each night works very well.

Now, both of my children have the same bedtime routine with their own children.
